A private day safari from Kigali into Rwanda's savannah wilderness — a full-day game drive through Akagera National Park with an optional Lake Ihema boat cruise.

Experience Rwanda's spectacular savannah landscapes on a 1-Day Akagera Wildlife Safari from Kigali to Akagera National Park. This private day safari is designed for travelers who have limited time but still want to experience Rwanda's wildlife, open plains, lakes and diverse habitats. The safari combines an early morning departure from Kigali with a full-day game drive through Akagera National Park.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda's major savannah safari destination and offers a very different experience from the country's famous mountain gorilla trekking. The park contains open grasslands, woodland, wetlands and lakes, creating habitats for a wide range of wildlife.
A one-day safari is particularly suitable for travelers staying in Kigali who have only one free day for wildlife viewing. You leave Kigali early, spend the majority of the day exploring Akagera with your private guide and return to Kigali in the evening.
Akagera is also known for its Big Five wildlife, although sightings of individual species can never be guaranteed on a one-day safari.

From Kigali to Akagera National Park and back — a full-day private safari. Follow the timeline below.
Your private driver-guide picks you up from your hotel in Kigali or another agreed location in the city. A departure around 4:30 AM–5:00 AM is recommended so that you can reach Akagera early enough to maximize your wildlife viewing time.
The drive takes you east from Kigali toward Akagera National Park. As you leave the city behind, the landscape changes from urban neighborhoods to rural communities, cultivated hills and open countryside. Your guide will brief you about the day's program and wildlife expectations along the way.

After reaching the park, you begin your wildlife safari. Akagera's landscape is characterized by savannah, woodland, wetlands and lakes, creating excellent conditions for a variety of wildlife. Your guide will select suitable routes based on recent wildlife sightings, weather and road conditions.
During the game drive you may encounter elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, impalas, topi, warthogs, waterbucks, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous bird species. Akagera is also known for its Big Five wildlife, although sightings of individual species can never be guaranteed on a one-day safari.

Around midday, you stop at an appropriate location for lunch. Take time to relax, enjoy the surrounding scenery and continue observing wildlife before the afternoon game drive. The exact lunch arrangement depends on the confirmed package and can be organized as a packed safari lunch or at an appropriate lodge/restaurant.

After lunch, continue exploring Akagera. The afternoon drive provides another opportunity to search for wildlife and explore different sections of the park. Your guide will continue looking for animals while explaining their behavior, habitat and role within the ecosystem.
You may also encounter large herds of antelope, zebra and buffalo moving through the open savannah.

For travelers who want to add a water-based experience, the Lake Ihema boat cruise is an excellent optional activity. The lake is known for hippos, crocodiles and water birds, while elephants and other wildlife may sometimes be seen near the shoreline.
The boat cruise should be requested when booking so that availability can be checked and the final price confirmed.

After the final game-drive session, leave Akagera National Park and begin the journey back toward Kigali. Your guide will select the most suitable departure time depending on your activities and the agreed itinerary.
Arrive back in Kigali in the evening. Your driver-guide drops you at your hotel, Kigali International Airport or another agreed location. Your 1-Day Akagera Wildlife Safari ends here.
