Walk into the heart of Uganda's rainforest and experience chimpanzees where they belong — in the wild. Kibale National Park, the Bigodi Wetland and a genuine primate adventure.

This 3-Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari takes you into the lush forests of western Uganda for an unforgettable encounter with wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Kibale National Park is one of Uganda's leading primate destinations and is widely known for its chimpanzee population and exceptional diversity of forest primates. The safari combines chimpanzee tracking with a guided nature experience in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, giving you the opportunity to experience both rainforest wildlife and community conservation. Your journey begins in Kampala or Entebbe before traveling through Uganda's scenic countryside toward Kibale.
The chimpanzee tracking fee is one of the main components of this safari. SafariBookings currently lists the baseline Kibale chimpanzee trekking fee at US$300, which includes the park entrance and guide services.
Permit prices and Uganda Wildlife Authority tariffs can change, so the final quotation should always be based on the applicable rate for your travel date. We recommend confirming chimpanzee permit availability before making non-refundable accommodation or transport arrangements.
Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale can be enjoyed throughout the year. The drier season is popular because forest trails can be easier to navigate.
Rain is possible at any time because Kibale is a tropical rainforest.
Accommodation should ideally be close to the Kibale Forest trekking area to make the morning start convenient.

From Kampala or Entebbe to Kibale National Park, chimpanzee tracking, the Bigodi Wetland and back. Follow the day-by-day timeline below.
Your 3-Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari begins early in the morning from Kampala or Entebbe. Meet your professional driver-guide and start your journey west toward Kibale National Park.
The drive takes you through Uganda's changing landscapes, from urban areas around Kampala and Entebbe into the rolling countryside of western Uganda. Along the way, you will pass agricultural communities, tea plantations and small towns before reaching the greener landscapes surrounding Kibale.
Depending on your departure point, the journey takes most of the day, so an early start is recommended. Stop along the way for lunch before continuing toward Kibale. As you approach the park, the landscape becomes increasingly dominated by tropical forest. Kibale is famous for its primates, and the forest is home to chimpanzees as well as other species of monkeys.
After arriving at your lodge, check in and relax. Your guide will brief you about the following day's chimpanzee tracking experience, including what to wear, what to carry and what to expect inside the forest. If time permits, you can take a short walk around the lodge or simply enjoy the surrounding forest environment. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Today is the main highlight of your safari. Wake early and enjoy breakfast before heading to the chimpanzee tracking briefing point. Your guide will introduce you to the tracking procedures and explain the rules for observing chimpanzees in the forest. You then enter Kibale Forest with your guide and begin searching for a habituated chimpanzee community.
Chimpanzee Tracking Experience: Chimpanzee tracking is different from a traditional game drive. Instead of following roads in a safari vehicle, you walk through the forest searching for signs of chimpanzee activity. Your trackers may look for chimpanzee calls, nests, footprints, droppings, broken branches, feeding remains and movement through the forest canopy.
Chimpanzees can be highly active and may move quickly through the trees. When you locate the group, your guide will position you at a safe and appropriate viewing point. You may see chimpanzees feeding, grooming, calling, playing or moving through the forest.
The experience can also produce encounters with other primates — depending on the area and season, you may encounter species such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and olive baboons. Kibale is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with many forest species living within the park. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and time to relax.
Optional Afternoon Experience: Depending on the timing of your chimpanzee trek, you can choose an additional forest or community activity. One of the most popular options is the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, where a guided walk can introduce you to the wetland ecosystem and the surrounding communities. The walk provides opportunities to see monkeys, birds, butterflies and other wildlife while learning about community-based conservation. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, begin your final activity around Kibale. If the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk was not completed on Day 2, today is an ideal opportunity to explore it.
Bigodi Wetland Experience: The Bigodi area is managed through community-based tourism and offers a different perspective of the Kibale landscape. Rather than focusing only on chimpanzees, the guided walk introduces you to the wetland, forest-edge habitats and local communities. You may see several monkey species, colorful birds and butterflies along the trails. Your local guide will also explain how tourism supports community initiatives around Kibale.
After the walk, return to the lodge, check out and begin the journey back toward Kampala or Entebbe. Stop for lunch along the way. Depending on your onward travel plans, you can be dropped at your hotel, Kampala city or Entebbe International Airport.
This marks the end of your 3-Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari.

Chimpanzee tracking is a walking experience rather than a vehicle-based safari. You should be prepared to walk through:
The amount of walking varies depending on where the chimpanzee community is located. Your guides and trackers will lead the way and look for signs of the chimpanzees. Chimpanzees can move quickly, so sightings may sometimes involve following them through the forest.
If you want a longer and more immersive experience with chimpanzees, Kibale also offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. Regular chimpanzee tracking provides a shorter visitor experience with a habituated chimpanzee community.
The habituation experience allows visitors to spend substantially more time observing chimpanzees while researchers and trackers continue the habituation process. The habituation experience costs more and requires additional time, so it is better suited to travelers with a strong interest in primates, photography or conservation.

The suggested price is based on two travelers sharing a private safari vehicle and mid-range accommodation. The chimpanzee permit itself is a major part of the cost.
| Number of Travelers | Price Per Person |
|---|---|
| 1 Traveler | From US$1,450 |
| 2 Travelers | From US$1,050 |
| 3 Travelers | From US$950 |
| 4 Travelers | From US$875 |
| 5–6 Travelers | From US$800 |
Important: Current comparable private 3-day Kibale chimpanzee safaris are listed around US$1,001–US$1,125 pp for two travelers, making a starting price around US$1,050 competitive for a mid-range version. The final price depends on:

This 3-Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari begins and ends in Kampala or Entebbe. A Kigali version is possible but requires a different itinerary and additional cross-border logistics.
Neutral-colored clothing is recommended for forest activities. Good hiking footwear is particularly important because trails can become slippery after rain.

Families traveling with younger children can discuss alternative forest and wildlife activities with the operator.
Yes — this is one of the best ways to extend the safari. A four- or five-day itinerary can combine Kibale with Queen Elizabeth National Park, giving you both primate tracking and traditional savannah wildlife viewing. An extended route could include:

This package is designed as a private safari. Your group travels in a dedicated 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. This gives you more flexibility during transfers and forest activities and allows the itinerary to be adjusted around your interests.
