Day 1: Entebbe – Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Experience
Mabamba Swamp · Shoebill boat excursion · Scenic transfer to Bwindi

Your 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari begins in Entebbe. After breakfast, meet your professional safari guide and travel towards Mabamba Swamp, one of Uganda's best-known destinations for shoebill watching. Mabamba is a Ramsar wetland on the northern shore of Lake Victoria and is particularly famous for its shoebill population. The wetland is also home to numerous other bird species.

Board a local boat and enter the maze of papyrus channels that make up Mabamba Swamp. Your experienced local boat guide will navigate through the shallow waterways while searching for the iconic shoebill. The bird can be difficult to locate because it can remain motionless among the papyrus, but the local guides are familiar with the wetland and know areas where shoebills are frequently encountered.

Besides the shoebill, you may see African jacanas, African pygmy geese, kingfishers, herons, egrets, African fish eagles and other wetland birds. More than 300 bird species have been recorded in Mabamba.

After the boat excursion, return to Entebbe for lunch before beginning the journey southwest towards Bwindi. The drive takes you through Uganda's countryside, with opportunities to see local communities, farms, trading centres and changing landscapes. Arrive at your lodge in the Bwindi area in the evening.

After breakfast, continue the journey towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The landscape gradually changes as you travel into southwestern Uganda, with rolling hills, cultivated slopes and increasingly mountainous terrain. Bwindi is a UNESCO-recognized rainforest landscape and one of Uganda's principal mountain gorilla trekking destinations.

The park has four main gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Your accommodation will be selected according to the gorilla trekking sector assigned for your permit. Arrive at your lodge, check in and relax. Your guide will also brief you about the following day's gorilla trek, including what to pack and how to prepare for the forest conditions.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Park briefing · Gorilla trekking · 2–7 hours in the forest · One hour with family

Today is the main highlight of your 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari. After an early breakfast, travel to your designated gorilla trekking trailhead for registration and briefing. Meet the ranger guides before entering the rainforest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family.

The trek takes you through Bwindi's dense forest, where the terrain can be steep, muddy and challenging. Your ranger guides and trackers will lead the group while searching for signs of the gorillas. Gorilla trekking can take several hours depending on where the assigned family is located. UWA states that a gorilla trek may last approximately 2 to 7 hours, with visitors receiving one hour of observation with a habituated gorilla family.

Once you locate the gorillas, you will have the permitted viewing period to observe their behavior and photograph them while following the ranger's instructions. You may see adults, juveniles and playful young gorillas within the family. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. The afternoon is free to rest after the forest adventure.

Gorilla trekking permits are subject to availability, so travelers should book early. UWA's current guidance identifies Bwindi and Mgahinga as Uganda's gorilla trekking destinations and confirms that visitors are allocated to gorilla families according to the designated tracking entry point and the day's arrangements. See the Uganda Wildlife Authority for official permit details.

Day 4: Batwa Cultural Experience – Golden Monkey Tracking
Batwa community · Mgahinga area · Golden monkey trek

Day four combines cultural tourism with another exciting primate experience. After breakfast, leave Bwindi and travel towards the Mgahinga area. Begin with a Batwa cultural experience where you learn about the traditional forest knowledge, history and cultural heritage of the Batwa communities associated with the forests of southwestern Uganda. Community-based experiences can provide travelers with an opportunity to learn directly from local guides and communities. The Uganda Wildlife Authority's Bwindi information also identifies community walks as opportunities to learn about Batwa and Bakiga communities around the forest.

After the cultural experience, continue towards the Mgahinga area for golden monkey tracking. Golden monkey tracking takes place in the bamboo and montane forests of the Virunga region. With your ranger guide, enter the forest in search of golden monkeys. These striking primates are endemic to the Albertine Rift region and are known for their distinctive golden-orange coloration. The experience involves walking through forest terrain while following the movements of the golden monkey troops. After the activity, return to your accommodation and relax.
