A private day trip from Kigali to Rubavu/Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu — scenic countryside, lakeside relaxation, and an optional boat or kayaking experience.

Escape Kigali for a full day beside one of Rwanda's most beautiful lakes on a 1-Day Lake Kivu Adventure to Rubavu, also known as Gisenyi. This private day trip combines scenic road travel from Kigali with the relaxed atmosphere of Lake Kivu, lakeside exploration, beautiful views, local experiences and an optional or included water activity such as a boat trip or kayaking, depending on availability.
Lake Kivu offers a completely different experience from Rwanda's gorilla trekking and savannah safaris. Instead of spending the day searching for wildlife, you travel toward Rwanda's western province to enjoy lake scenery, fresh air, beaches, local communities and the peaceful atmosphere around Rubavu.
It is particularly suitable for travelers staying in Kigali who want to see more of Rwanda but have only one free day. The journey also provides an opportunity to see the changing landscapes of Rwanda as you travel from the capital toward the western highlands.
It is also a useful add-on for travelers who have already completed a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.
If you have only one free day in Rwanda, the two experiences are very different. Here's how to choose:
This gives travelers a clear choice without making either experience seem like the wrong option.

From Kigali to Rubavu/Gisenyi on Lake Kivu and back — a full-day private trip. Follow the timeline below.
Your private driver-guide picks you up from your hotel in Kigali around 5:00 AM. After a short briefing, begin your journey toward western Rwanda. The drive takes you through Rwanda's famous rolling hills and rural countryside. Along the way, you will see cultivated hillsides, villages and changing landscapes as you approach Lake Kivu. Your guide can make short stops at suitable viewpoints for photographs.

Continue toward Rubavu/Gisenyi, one of the main towns on the shores of Lake Kivu. Rubavu is known for its lakeside atmosphere, beaches and views across Lake Kivu. Once you arrive, begin your Lake Kivu experience.

Take a walk along the lakeshore and enjoy views across the water. Depending on your interests, you can spend time at a suitable beach area, visit a lakeside café or simply relax beside the lake. Your guide can also explain the importance of Lake Kivu to communities living around its shores.
This is a good opportunity for photography because the lake, surrounding hills and boats create a very different landscape from Kigali.

After exploring the shoreline, enjoy a water-based activity. Choose from a Lake Kivu boat trip — a boat ride across part of the lake to enjoy views of the surrounding hills and shoreline — or kayaking for a more active experience, paddling along the lake while enjoying the scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
Water activities are subject to weather, operator availability and safety conditions.

After the morning activities, enjoy lunch at a suitable restaurant overlooking or near Lake Kivu. Depending on availability, you can choose from local Rwandan dishes and other meals suitable for international travelers. Take some time to relax after lunch.

Spend the afternoon exploring Rubavu. You can visit the lakeside area, walk through parts of the town or spend additional time relaxing near the lake. Travelers interested in local life can also request a short community or cultural experience. The afternoon should remain flexible because many travelers prefer to use this time simply to enjoy the lake.

After completing your Lake Kivu activities, begin the drive back toward Kigali. Your guide can make suitable scenic stops along the way depending on daylight and traffic. Arrive in Kigali in the evening and transfer to your hotel or another agreed drop-off point. Your 1-Day Lake Kivu Adventure ends here.
