Explore Uganda's Lake Victoria wildlife — Shoebill tracking at Mabamba Swamp combined with a memorable chimpanzee experience on Ngamba Island, just a short trip from Entebbe or Kampala.

The 2-Day Mabamba Swamp and Ngamba Island Safari is an ideal short Uganda wildlife experience for travelers staying in Entebbe or Kampala who want to discover two of the country's most interesting conservation destinations without traveling deep into the national parks. On Day 1, you explore the papyrus channels of Mabamba Swamp by canoe in search of the famous Shoebill and other wetland birds. On Day 2, you cross Lake Victoria by boat to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where you observe rescued chimpanzees during their scheduled feeding experience.
These two destinations provide very different wildlife experiences. At Mabamba, the focus is on wetland wildlife and birdwatching, particularly the Shoebill. You explore the swamp quietly by canoe through papyrus channels.
At Ngamba Island, the focus changes to chimpanzee conservation and sanctuary-based wildlife viewing. Combining them in one short safari gives travelers an opportunity to experience both Uganda's wetland biodiversity and primate conservation without traveling far from Entebbe.

From Kampala or Entebbe to Mabamba Swamp and Ngamba Island, then back. Follow the day-by-day timeline below.
Your 2-Day Mabamba Swamp and Ngamba Island Safari begins with pickup from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. An early start is recommended, particularly for travelers interested in bird photography and Shoebill sightings. You will travel towards Mabamba Swamp before beginning the canoe excursion into the wetland.
Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Experience: Mabamba is a wetland on the northern shore of Lake Victoria and is well known for its Shoebill population. The best way to explore the wetland is by a guided boat trip through its narrow channels. Local guides navigate through the papyrus and shallow waters while searching for Shoebills and other wetland species.
Possible sightings include: Shoebill · African fish eagle · Kingfishers · Herons · Egrets · Jacanas · Weavers · Other wetland species.
A Shoebill sighting cannot be guaranteed because the birds move through the wetland naturally. After the canoe excursion, return to the mainland and enjoy lunch. You will then transfer to your hotel in Entebbe. The afternoon can be spent relaxing around Lake Victoria or at your hotel. If time permits, an optional Entebbe activity can be added.
After breakfast, you will transfer to the boat departure point in Entebbe. Board the boat for the journey across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island. The sanctuary's published information states that boats operate from Entebbe locations including Waterfront Club and Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, with different boat options available.
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Experience: Upon arrival, you will receive an introduction to the sanctuary and its chimpanzee residents before proceeding to the visitor viewing area. The main experience is observing the chimpanzees during their feeding session.
Ngamba Island's visitor program offers both morning and afternoon experiences. Its published schedule lists a morning session from approximately 9:00 AM to 12:45 PM and an afternoon session from approximately 12:45 PM to 5:00 PM.
During the experience, you may watch the chimpanzees feeding, climbing, playing, vocalizing and interacting with one another. Your guide or sanctuary staff will explain the chimpanzees' stories and the conservation work involved in caring for rescued animals.
You will also have time to enjoy the island environment, photograph the scenery and observe some of the birdlife around the sanctuary. After the experience, board the boat back to Entebbe. From Entebbe, you can be transferred to your hotel in Entebbe or continue to Kampala.

We believe in full transparency. Below is exactly what is included in your 2-Day Mabamba Swamp and Ngamba Island Safari — and what is not.

Entebbe is the most convenient starting point for this itinerary because both experiences are located around Lake Victoria. Travelers staying in Kampala can also be picked up and transferred to Entebbe for the activities.
This is a relaxed short safari combining gentle wetland canoeing with a boat journey across Lake Victoria and a comfortable island visit. No hiking or trekking is involved. Both days feature time on the water, so a waterproof bag for electronics is particularly useful.
Children should remain under adult supervision during the boat journeys and follow all sanctuary instructions around the chimpanzees.
