Small in Size, Enormous in Character
Uganda's Hidden Gem

Lake Mburo National Park is perhaps Uganda's most underrated treasure. Compact, accessible, and wonderfully intimate, it lies just three hours from Kampala and offers a safari experience that is entirely unique in East Africa. Unlike Uganda's other parks, Lake Mburo is home to Uganda's only population of impalas — a graceful antelope absent everywhere else in the country — and it is the only park in Uganda where visitors may explore on horseback or on foot without an armed escort in certain zones.
The park's mosaic of savannah, acacia woodland, papyrus swamps, and the glistening Lake Mburo itself supports remarkable biodiversity, including zebra, buffalo, eland, topi, leopard, hippo, and over 350 bird species. Its smaller size means game drives rarely feel crowded, and wildlife encounters here feel genuinely personal in a way that larger, more famous parks sometimes do not.
Activities in Lake Mburo

Game drives through the acacia-studded savannahs at dawn reveal zebra herds silhouetted against orange skies, while the lakeside circuits at dusk are reliable for large concentrations of buffalo, waterbuck, and reedbuck. Boat safaris on Lake Mburo drift silently past basking crocodiles, schools of hippos, and extraordinary waterbirds including the African finfoot. Guided walking safaris allow guests to track wildlife on foot alongside a knowledgeable ranger — a rare and thrilling experience that reconnects visitors with the raw intimacy of the African bush. Horseback safaris are one of Lake Mburo's most celebrated offerings, allowing riders of all abilities to move quietly among zebra and antelope in ways impossible from a vehicle.
Safari Lodges & Camps in Lake Mburo
Mihingo Lodge is the park's signature luxury property, perched dramatically on a rocky kopje above the savannah with views across the plains to the lake. Twelve tented suites on timber platforms face the wilderness directly, and the swimming pool — cantilevered over the kopje — is one of the most spectacular in Uganda. Horseback safaris are arranged exclusively through the lodge.

Rwakobo Rock Lodge occupies a stunning elevated position on an ancient granite outcrop, with 180-degree views of the park's open plains. The four stone cottages blend organically into the rock, and the lodge's guiding team is considered among the finest in the country.
Eagle's Nest Camp sits at the forest-savannah boundary and offers an authentic tented camp experience with outstanding birding on site. Its proximity to the lake makes it ideal for boat safari departures at first light.
Arcadia Cottages on the park boundary is a popular mid-range option offering comfortable stone cottages, a warm atmosphere, and excellent value. It is particularly well-suited to families and self-drive travellers.
