akagera safari

Discover the two extremes of Rwanda’s natural beauty with Tarec Gorilla Safaris. This 4-day expedition bridges the golden, sun-swept savannahs of Akagera National Park with the ancient, emerald rainforests of Nyungwe. From tracking the "Big Five" to walking among the treetops with wild chimpanzees, this safari offers a diverse and high-octane immersion into the wild heart of the "Land of a Thousand Hills."

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Akagera National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your Tarec Gorilla Safaris guide. After a short safari briefing, we drive east toward the border of Tanzania to enter Akagera National Park. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where you will get close-up views of giant Nile crocodiles, pods of hippos, and a variety of water birds. We conclude the day with a short "sundowner" game drive.

Day 2: Full Day Game Drive & Transfer back to Kigali

We start with a sunrise game drive to explore the northern plains of the park. This is the best time to spot predators like lions and leopards, as well as herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and the rare rhinoceros. Akagera is a stunning success story of conservation and "Big Five" restoration. In the late afternoon, we exit the park and drive back to Kigali for a restful night before heading to the forest tomorrow.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest & Canopy Walkway

We depart Kigali early, driving south through scenic landscapes. We stop at the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza to learn about Rwanda's royal history and see the long-horned Inyambo cattle. Upon reaching Nyungwe National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, we embark on the famous Canopy Walkway. Suspended 70 meters above the forest floor, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the ancient canopy and spot various bird species and monkeys.
