Why Choose This 6-Day Uganda Primates and Wildlife Safari?

Uganda is one of Africa's most rewarding destinations for combining primate encounters with traditional wildlife safaris. Kibale Forest is one of the country's major chimpanzee trekking destinations, while Queen Elizabeth National Park adds elephants, buffaloes, hippos, antelopes, lions and other wildlife. The journey then continues to Bwindi, where you experience one of Africa's most memorable wildlife encounters: trekking mountain gorillas in their natural rainforest habitat.

Full 6-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala to Kibale Forest
Early morning pickup · Drive west through tea plantations · Arrival at Kibale

Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. You travel west through Uganda's countryside toward Kibale Forest National Park, passing rural communities, tea plantations and scenic landscapes along the way. Kibale is famous for its population of chimpanzees and is also home to numerous other primates.

After arriving near the park, check into your lodge and relax. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short nature walk or visit a nearby community.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking – Kibale Forest to Queen Elizabeth
Chimpanzee trekking briefing · Forest trek · Transfer to Queen Elizabeth

After breakfast, head to the Kibale Forest chimpanzee trekking briefing point. Your ranger guide will provide information about the trekking rules before you enter the forest. The trek takes you through the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities, and along the way you may encounter other primates and forest species. Kibale is particularly well known for its primate diversity, making the forest experience more than simply a chimpanzee trek.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before continuing toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey takes you through scenic countryside toward the park. Check into your lodge and relax.

Day 3: Queen Elizabeth Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Cruise
Morning game drive · Afternoon boat cruise · Wildlife & birdlife

Wake up early for breakfast before heading out for a morning game drive. Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda's best-known wildlife destinations, with opportunities to see elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs, lions and other wildlife. The early morning hours are ideal for wildlife viewing as animals are often active before the heat of the day increases. Your guide will search different tracks and habitats while explaining the wildlife and ecosystem of the park.

Return for lunch before heading to the Kazinga Channel. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise along the channel. The waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George and is known for large concentrations of hippos and crocodiles. You may also see buffaloes, elephants and a variety of water birds along the shoreline.

The drive takes you through changing landscapes as the savannah gradually gives way to the highlands and forests surrounding Bwindi. Depending on your route and trekking sector, you may pass through the Ishasha area.

Arrival at Bwindi is followed by check-in at your lodge. The remainder of the day is available for relaxation and preparation for the following day's gorilla trek.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today is the highlight of your 6-Day Uganda Primates and Wildlife Safari. After an early breakfast, travel to the gorilla trekking briefing point. The Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides provide a briefing before you enter the forest. The trek can take several hours depending on the location of your assigned gorilla family. Bwindi's terrain can be steep and muddy, so proper hiking footwear and reasonable physical fitness are important.

Once you locate the gorilla family, you spend the permitted viewing time observing them in their natural rainforest environment. You may see adult females, juveniles and silverbacks as the family moves through the forest. After the trek, return to the park headquarters before transferring back to your lodge. The remainder of the evening is for relaxation.

Gorilla & Chimpanzee Permit Information

A valid gorilla trekking permit and a chimpanzee trekking permit are required before undertaking the treks. UWA's published 2024–June 2026 tariff listed the foreign non-resident gorilla tracking permit at US$800, with the permit covering the guide fee, park entrance for the day and community development contribution.

Because that published tariff period ended in June 2026, the applicable permit rates for your actual travel date should be confirmed with Uganda Wildlife Authority before final payment. Permit availability is limited, so we recommend contacting Tarec Gorilla Safaris as early as possible with your preferred travel dates.
